Press Telegram Touts Poly Among California's Best Programs

Lakewood and Long Beach Poly are ranked among the 10 best teams in the state, and St. Anthony and St. Joseph are coming off lower-division CIF Southern Section championships.
“The sport has been doing very well in our area,” said Lakewood coach Mike Wadley, who admitted he’s hoping for an all-Moore League CIF championship with his team and Poly.
The Jackrabbits are off to a 6-2 start that includes a win over defending CIF and state champion Santa Margarita. Poly was also the only area team to make the CIF State Open Division last year. Those two factors are why Cal-Hi Sports has the Jackrabbits ranked No. 2 in the state, ahead of a Lakewood team that beat them twice in league last year. Poly was also ranked No. 10 in the nation in USA Today’s first poll, released earlier this week.
Poly coach Leland McGrath has said he’s not focused on rankings, but on helping his team get better throughout the season. Poly also graduated a Pac-12 player — as setter Penny Tusa (Washington State). The Jackrabbits have plenty of big pieces, including Washington State-committed Kalyah Williams, a middle blocker who’s playing outside this year to get her more swings.
In the middle, the Jackrabbits have one of the breakout stars of last year, junior Onye Ofoegbu, a 6-foot-6 mobile blocker who can wreak havoc on opposing offenses. They also have junior Allanah Cutler as another big arm. Other weapons include Kaia Brown and Alewa Anaya.
Tying it together is third-year starting setter Liz Schuster, and junior libero Sofia Skukan.
